Come, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”,  and relive the story of Dorothy Gale, as she journeys from a Kansas farm, over the rainbow to the magical land of Oz.  All the familiar songs and characters remain in this classic story.

Audition Information

For auditions, please prepare 16-32 measures of a song that will show off your voice.  Your song does not have to be memorized, but please bring a copy for the accompanist.  Be prepared to learn a short dance.  We might ask you to read or sing from the show.  We want you to relax and have fun while auditioning.

Children who try out need to be 9 years of age or older at the time of auditions.  If possible, we would encourage children coming to the Friday audition, but will not be turned away if unable to make that specific time.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

  • Dorothy Gale – Strong willed, caring, brave teenager.  She is looking for a way to escape her problems.  A loving and trusting soul.
    • Gender: Female, Age 16+
    • Voice Type:  Mezzo
  • Scarecrow/Hank – A farmhand in the first scene.  Looking for a brain but much smarter than he seems.  Funny, flexible, energetic, and a good dancer.
    • Voice Type: Tenor/Baritone
  • Tin Man/Hickory – A farmhand in the first scene.  Looking for a heart but truly a caring, gentle soul.  Needs to dance but not as agile.
    • Voice Type: Tenor/Baritone
  • Cowardly Lion/Zeke – A farmhand in the first scene.  Needs to move well.  Strong comic role has self-esteem issues.  Needs to dance and move around the stage well.
    • Voice Type: Tenor/Baritone
  • Glinda/Auntie Em – Strong character.  Kind and caring in both roles.  As Aunt Em, no nonsense person who keeps things in order at the farm.  As Glinda, treated like royalty.
  • Voice Type: Mezzo Soprano
  • Wicked Witch/Miss Gulch – Non singing role as Miss Gulch, an unfeeling, nasty woman.  We don’t like her!  As the Wicked Witch, a mean green nasty machine!  She does have some comedic moments though.  Strong stage presence—she needs to get used to green makeup.
  • The Wizard/Professor Marvel – Non singing role.  A lovable con man with a sense of humor.  Need a flair for the dramatic, especially as the wizard.  Crafty, resourceful, and quick witted who deep down is a good man.
  • Oz Guard/Uncle Henry – Initially a tough guard, but later becomes welcoming to Dorothy.  As Uncle Henry, a proud farmer with a sense of humor. Limited singing role.
  • Ensemble – We are planning to cast 30-35 people in this show.  We are looking for 4-6 dance couples.  There are multiple roles that the ensemble will fill.  These include Munchkins, Crows, Trees, Poppies, Ozians, Winkies, Flying Monkeys, and Jitterbugs.  Specific “munchkins” will be cast in Munchkinland as the Mayor, Coroner, Barrister, Lollipop Guild, and the Lullaby League.
